Happy Blog-aversary to meeeeeee

My blog is old enough for kindergarten!  I’m celebrating 5 years of blogging under my belt today. I may not post as often as I should, but I do enjoy sharing our planning and travel with you readers 🙂

Anyway, here’s a look back at last year’s capsule post:

I will have greatly enjoyed our European trip, having packed just the right amount of clothes, purchased the perfect magnets/souvenirs, and taken precious photos of my family having both spontaneous and planned fun.  I will be spoiled by having seen my parents in December (for Xmas in North Carolina), January (on the way back from Europe), March (for the band trip), and May (when they visit Hawaii for DD’s graduation).  I will be getting ready to send DD off to college and wondering if I can pay for tuition with a credit card…think of all the miles!

THAT IS SPOT ON!  The carry-on only packing strategy worked beautifully, I love all the magnets/souvenirs, and have the trip photos in a slideshow as my screensaver.  I am indeed spoiled re: family time, having seen my parents and sister/niece quite often in 2019.  The NYC trip was incredible, and we had such fun times at DD’s graduation.  DD is off to college- and I CAN PAY TUITION WITH A CREDIT CARD!  I chose my Bank of America Premium Rewards for the charges- the 1.5 points per dollar I earn can be redeemed for all kinds of general travel costs, and since I don’t have any travel planned until next summer, the charges won’t co-mingle with everyday expenses.

Next up for me is more planning.

  • I’m about 10 months out from my next trip…shhhhhh, it’s a surprise mother-son trip to Disneyland.  I did a similar surprise Disneyland trip with DD when she was around the same age.  DS has heard all about it but has no idea it’s coming for him, too 🙂  I gotta figure out this MaxPass thing…
  • 2021 will likely see us in Ecuador again!!!  By then, the timing will be right to visit the Galápagos Islands.  DS will be old/strong enough, and DH will be young/strong enough, haha.  Not sure of the season yet.

Ok, now to the capsule statement for next year…

DS and I will have had a magical blast at Disneyland, with a new pair of Disneyland socks for me (a story for another day).  I’ll be much closer to deciding when to go to Ecuador, and getting ready to use some of my tuition-related points on the travel activities.  I may have a new-to-me car, as my primary vehicle is starting to become less reliable.  DD will have finished her first year of college, and I HOPE contemplating taking a stab at the Disney College Program.

Happy Blog-aversary to meeeeeee

This is a short and sweet celebration of 4 years of blogging.  I’m grateful to still have this outlet for all my planning shenanigans.  PLAN-anigans?!  Yes, I just made that word up, and …yes, you’re all very welcome to use it.  If I ever change the name of this blog, it’ll be to “Plananigans: the joys of an orderly life.”

Anyway, here’s a look back at last year’s capsule post:

I’m in the thick of advance planning for Europe 2018, as well as being super focused on finishing off the car loan a year early.  I’ll be grateful that we can take the kids on these adventures, and soak in their gratitude, as they have really started to express it.  I’ll be banking any miles/points bonus opportunities and sharing them here.  I hope everyone can achieve their travel dreams, and hope to help them along!  Here’s to another year!

I’m going to call it a success.  We did in fact pay off our car loan over a year early, so that bit of the budget has already been reallocated to the Car Replacement/Repair Fund.  And the kids are getting ever more excited about the trip, with my son making a passport for his stuffed bear, and my daughter planning all the pictures she will take with a new camera she is saving up for.  I hope my sharing the ways I’ve used miles and points on this trip have been helpful to all!

Next up for me is more planning.

  • I’m considering getting a new credit card to help offset that pesky Paris-Seville trip cost.  It’s been a long time since I applied for one- almost 2 years, which is a lot for someone who loves sign-up bonuses!  Anyway, I’m still comparing which would work best for me, so I’ll write about it when I decide.
  • my daughter’s school band is doing a trip in the spring- to NYC!!!  They’ve been talking about it for about a year, and after several information sessions, and meeting the minimum number of participants, the trip is officially ON!  I will be going along, of course, but as an independent traveler.  I’m taking my son and staying with my parents in NJ- should be a great time.  Another trip to plan, yay.  Planning to use my Alaska Companion Fare for these mainland tix.

Ok, now to the capsule statement for next year…

3 years of blogging under my belt!

It’s that time of year again!  The anniversary of this blog 🙂

3 years ago, I started this project in hopes of helping other Hawaii families plan their travel away from the Islands.  Based on anecdotal evidence, it has worked!  It’s still quite a small blog, but I know people have benefited from the information therein. Read the rest of this entry »

2, count ’em, 2 years of blogging under my belt

I wrote this on 7/23/15:

Here’s a time capsule paragraph for when we look back at this post 1 year from now…

My family and I are less than 100 days away from my little boy’s 1st trip to WDW, and I’m putting the finishing touches on the planning spreadsheet as I get ready to make FP+ reservations.  Our next big trip will be to the East Coast in November 2016 for my daughter’s Quinceañera- planning on using miles for that, so expect blog postings re: redemptions beginning in December 2015.  I may try to sneak in a Neighbor Island trip in the spring, too, because I can’t bear the thought of a year going by without setting foot on a plane.  And we’re definitely due for a Europe trip within the next 2 years.  I will continue to accumulate as many miles and points as possible to make it easier to show my kids the world!

Breaking this down point by point…
Well, we all know how that trip went!  Super, super, super fun!  Additionally, we booked our fares to the Quinceañera using miles, just as predicted.  Re: the “Neighbor Island trip for the spring”… that morphed into a full-blown East Coast vs West Coast gangsta rap-style war, and has since been hugely downgraded to practically nothing, sigh (explanation to follow).  Europe 2018 is still definitely on, though.  And, of course, I’m still accumulating miles and points like a boss.
